I’ve been doing my own gel nails for a few years, then gradually became more and more irritated with the process. It’s not like I was bored with doing my own nails, quite the opposite. I love doing my own gel nails because they make my nails super strong, super shiny, and I have the freedom to use all kinds of colors and stones.
The part that I absolutely HATE is when it’s time to take them off. I don’t do fill ins since I don’t use acrylic, just soak off gel. I have a cheap $20 drill that only comes with the little brown bands and it’s simply too weak and doesn’t really speed up the removal process. I tried using the appropriate nail files (150, 180 grit) and doing it that way, but that also takes forever. Getting the gel down to the base in some spots on all fingers takes around 1.5 hours, using acetone in a foil wrap then extends it to another hour or so. Basically I had to sacrifice entire evenings/nights after work or take up the time on the weekend. Not to mention after re-wrapping and waiting, once I finally got all the gel off my nails would feel suuuuper brittle and sensitive.
I have a bunch of tools, awesome gel colors, a fancy light, and I couldn’t let the off process deter me from doing my nails… So I decided to take the plunge and bought a real nail drill. I purchased a Petitor L! This is probably the most affordable capable nail drill. It comes with a few different bits including a gold bit which is great for getting a lot of gel off fast.
The speed is adjustable and so is the direction of the bit, which is super helpful.
Here are the specs:
Colors: Black, Pink, Silver
Weight: 80 grams
Price: 9,670 yen ($90)
I took a little video to show how fast and easy it is to use!
Since doing this video I took off the green gel and it took 1 episode of Gotham (about 45 mins)! That’s a huge improvement from 2+ hours… When they were off, my nails didn’t have that terrible brittle feel. I’m not quite there yet, but it’s possible to take off all the gel, including base gel, without having to use acetone.
That’s about it, so I’ll just leave some of my favorite gel nail instagrams here
First blog of the year! The end of 2014 has been a really rough one but things have calmed down a lot since then. It’s very strange how fast everything happened and how my boyfriend’s brother isn’t here anymore… Instead of constant sadness everyone is focusing on all the good memories and kind words from friends and family.
It snowed on the 1st, then later the high school soccer team, that a former classmate participated in, won two games. There were lots of kind messages left on the dad’s blog. Little things so far have been working out for the better.
With that being said I’ll go into my usual type of blog.
*sudden theme change…*
EDIT when I read from here on it seems so shallow. I’m not good at going from dark to happy in one post. Didn’t feel like leaving out the above info and didn’t feel like making two separate posts.
It’s been a really long time since I did my nails at a salon. At the time I really didn’t want to do it myself. I found a good deal on hotpepper for 3900 yen.
They look really beautiful and sparkly under certain lighting. I’m happy with them.
Apparently taking the crazy nails off is going to be a hassle so I’ll go back to the same lady in a couple weeks and get a whole new design that doesn’t include a million stones. After that I’ll stick to doing gel nails by myself.
Skip forward to a few days ago, I went shopping in Umeda with a friend and decided to purchase some LUSH products for the first time ever! They had a few items that were on sale for 50% off. Usually one of their bathbombs cost around 760… That’s a lot of money for one bath… I have no idea. But for half that price? I can do that and at the same time end up, hopefully, supporting a company I think is pretty good.
Christmas item on sale. Doesn’t matter with all that nice glitter.
For most of my winter break I’ve been away from my apartment. Spent a night over at a friend’s house and decided to use her convenient full body mirror.
We went to H&M and I had the solid proof that I had gained quite a bit of weight in the past couple of months. BACK ROLLS. Immediately I decided to get the ball rolling by giving up cheese curls and soda. This is a small part of how I got to this state. I need to get back into Jillian Michael’s 30 day shred like before and just make a few dietary adjustments. Did it last year and can do it again.
Finally, I was given this after all the rushing around was done. It was his other brother’s idea. Don’t really have a surface to place it on so it’ll go on my wall. I’m very grateful.
I’ll post more about what’s going on in future posts.. Good news!
Walking around Namba Parks I came across this lovely wall!
And below we have a view of Umeda from the Hep5 building. Not sure what’s going on with the building to the right. Looks as if many windows were smashed??
Here is the obligatory cherry blossom shot. I would have totally missed hanami season if it weren’t for my old co-workers. Happy I got out there to participate. We went to Osaka castle. The best time to see the flowers was plagued by bad weather. It was overcast the entire day rained just a little..
Then, this past Saturday, me and some friends went to see our friend play in her band SECONDLADY. We went to the Hard Rock Cafe which is located near Honmachi station in Osaka. It was a lot of fun because my friend and some other customers were being hype machines. Someone even started to sing along which caught the vocalist off guard
Me and a friend split this enormous cobb salad with real blue cheese dressing. It was really good.
I was excited to get dessert because I ate around/under 1600 calories a day 7 days straight prior. It was time to let loose. I ate about 2/3 of their apple pie & ice cream. #fatnessfirst.
I’m going back to Tokyo either Friday night or Saturday morning! Just for one day of training… The free shinkansen ride makes up for it. My current job is pretty cool. So far, since things are just starting up, I’ve had a lot of days off and free time. On a few days I’ve had 3-4 hours of free time in the middle of the day or I’d just come in for 2 hours in the morning. Eventually things are going to pick up but not too much. Overall I’m pleasantly surprised. The kids are adorable and hilarious. It’s fun listening to their little conversations.
I took a relatively short break from nails. Last week I received a coupon from someone working around hikkakebashi for gel nails. The deal was any design you want that could be done within 90 minutes for 3500 yen. Which is incredibly cheap as the design I chose would have easily been over 6000 otherwise.
