Built me a computer

Posted on 22nd, May, 2014

A few weeks ago I put together my own PC for the first time! It was an exciting process shopping around and figuring out exactly what to get. I will say that there were a few headaches along the way in terms of availability and pricing. Almost all parts are marked up anywhere from 1000 to 3000 yen so this computer ended up being over my budget. A $600 build will run you almost $800 here… even Japan made products are similarly priced so you might as well get the imported parts.

CPU: AMD FX 6300
MOBO: ASRock 970 Extreme4
RAM: ADATA 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600
HDD: Western Digital 1TB HDD (blue)
GPU: GTX 750ti
PSU: Corsair CXM 500W
CPU cooler: Hyper 212 EvO
OS: Windows 8.1 courtesy of a lovely friend.

Almost everything I got from a store in Nipponbashi (Osaka, of course)

Had to replace the incredibly noisy default fan

The most annoying part was getting that heat sink installed. I’m terrified of anything that has to do with the CPU. Screwing it into place was a little scary because it needed quite a bit of pressure. Looking back it wasn’t all that terrible.. just time consuming.

I also couldn’t get a picture going because I was using my TV and didn’t have a proper monitor at the time. There was never a post beep at start up so I did a lot of trouble shooting. I got all kids of beeps when the ram was removed or if other things were removed so it had to have been fine. Lugged the entire thing back to the store I got it from and it immediately displayed the BIOS with their monitor! Anyway, it works perfectly and it turns out my computer doesn’t beep on start-up. I can run any game at the highest settings with 0 lag. I just really missed having a desktop. :h6

Late to the party… So far I’m loving Left 4 Dead 2

My room is almost complete. Finally I have a proper desk, chair, and curtains. The curtain situation seems to be my last hurdle. Gonna be in Tokyo again on Saturday so it’s going to have to wait until next week.

The next post probably will be coming relatively soon (within 2 weeks). I need to get it together.
